About Chelmsford

In the English county of Essex, the city of Chelmsford is located in the City of Chelmsford district. Along with Southend-on-Sea and Colchester, it is one of the three cities that make up Essex County. It is situated 22 miles (35 kilometres) south-west of Colchester and 50 miles (80 kilometres) north-east of Charing Cross in London. In contrast to the larger district, which had 168,310 residents, the urban area has 111,511 residents in the 2011 Census. The city has become more significant as a financial, administrative, and distribution hub thanks to its location near to London and in the heart of Essex.

Some of the city’s most recent large-scale housing developments are Chancellor Park, Beaulieu Park, The Village, and The Channels Development.

There were old villages nearby before 1199. The Springfield area has been home to Neolithic and late Bronze Age settlements, and Romans formerly lived there. In the year AD 60, a Roman fort was constructed, and a settlement developed around it. The city was given the name Caesaromagus, which translates to “Caesar’s Field” or “Caesar’s Marketplace,” however it is unknown why it was granted the high honour of carrying the imperial prefix. It may have been a failed “planned town” provincial capital intended to replace Londinium or Camulodunum. Under the streets of contemporary Moulsham, you may find the remnants of a mansio, which served as a combination post office, municipal centre, and hotel. You can also find the ruins of an octagonal temple beneath the Odeon roundabout.
