Frequently Asked Questions About TV Aerials
Why is my TV showing no signal?
A no signal message can be caused by a loose cable, damaged aerial, faulty wall plate, splitter problem, poor tuning or an issue with connected equipment. Check the cables and TV input first. If the problem continues, an aerial and signal check may be needed.
Why does my TV picture keep pixelating or freezing?
Pixelation and freezing usually point to poor signal quality rather than the television itself. Common causes include an old or misaligned aerial, damaged coax cable, loose connections, water ingress, interference or an overloaded splitter.
Do I need a new TV aerial for Freeview?
You need a suitable working aerial to receive Freeview through a television or Freeview box. You may not need a new aerial if your current system is in good condition and provides a stable signal.
Do smart TVs need a TV aerial?
A smart TV can use internet apps without an aerial, but a working aerial is normally required to watch live Freeview channels through the television's built-in tuner.
Can an old TV aerial still receive digital television?
Yes, some older aerials can receive digital TV if they are in good condition, correctly aligned and suitable for the available signal. Age alone does not always mean replacement is needed.
Why am I missing some Freeview channels?
Missing channels can be caused by weak signal, poor signal quality, incorrect tuning, damaged cables, aerial alignment issues or transmitter work. Retuning should normally be done after checking that the signal is stable.
Should I retune my TV when the picture is breaking up?
Retuning is not always the best first step. If the incoming signal is poor, retuning can remove channels from the list. Check cables and signal quality before repeatedly retuning.
Can bad weather affect TV reception?
Strong wind, heavy rain and storms can expose existing faults such as a loose aerial, damaged bracket, cracked cable or water ingress. A healthy aerial system should usually continue working in normal weather.
Can trees or nearby buildings affect an aerial signal?
Yes. Trees, rooflines, nearby buildings and changes around the property can affect the signal path. An engineer can test different positions and recommend the most reliable setup.
What is the difference between signal strength and signal quality?
Signal strength measures how much signal reaches the television, while signal quality measures how clean and usable that signal is. A strong but poor-quality signal can still cause freezing and missing channels.
Do TV aerial boosters always improve reception?
No. A booster can help where a good-quality signal needs distributing to several rooms, but it cannot repair a damaged aerial or poor cable. Too much amplification can also make reception worse.
Can one aerial supply more than one television?
Yes. One suitable aerial can often feed several televisions through a correctly planned splitter or distribution amplifier. The available signal should be tested before adding extra TV points.
Can you install an extra TV point in another room?
Yes. Extra TV points can often be installed in bedrooms, kitchens, extensions, offices and rental rooms. The engineer may need to check the existing aerial signal and the most practical cable route.
Can a TV aerial point be moved?
Yes, a TV point can often be moved when changing room layouts or mounting a television on another wall. The best route depends on the wall type, cable access and location of the existing feed.
How long does a TV aerial installation take?
A straightforward installation often takes around one to two hours. Difficult access, long cable routes, extra TV points or fault finding can make the job take longer.
Can you repair an aerial instead of replacing it?
Yes. If the aerial is secure and suitable, a repair to the cable, connector, wall plate, bracket or splitter may be enough. Replacement may be more practical when the aerial is badly corroded, unsafe or unsuitable.
What happens during a TV aerial signal check?
The engineer can inspect the aerial system, test signal strength and quality, check cables and connections, review any splitters or amplifiers and identify whether repair, replacement or retuning is needed.
Do landlords need permission to install a TV aerial?
Landlords can usually arrange work on their own property, but flats, listed buildings and managed developments may have additional restrictions. Tenants should obtain permission before external drilling or fitting equipment.
Can you help with communal TV aerial systems?
Communal systems serve multiple flats or properties and may require access to shared equipment. An engineer can often identify whether the fault is within the individual property or part of the wider system.
Do you provide free quotes for aerial work?
James Wilson TV Aerial Installer provides free no obligation quotations. The recommended work and price should be explained before agreed work begins.
Do you offer same-day aerial appointments?
Same-day local service may be available depending on the postcode, engineer schedule, access and type of work required. Calling early gives the best chance of arranging a faster appointment.
