About Canterbury
In the centre of the City of Canterbury, a local government area of Kent, England, sits Canterbury, a cathedral city and UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is located along the Stour River.
Because of the significance of St. Augustine, who acted as the missionary to the heathen Kingdom of Kent at the turn of the seventh century, the Archbishop of Canterbury is the primate of the Church of England and the global Anglican Communion.
The Marlowe Theatre, which is the city’s theatre and concert venue, is named for Christopher Marlowe, an author who was born there during the Elizabethan era. In the city’s St. George’s Church, which was destroyed in the Second World War, he was baptised. A repertory theatre was held at the former Marlowe Theatre, which was situated on St. Margaret’s Street. The Gulbenkian Theatre at the University of Kent serves the community as well and includes a café and a movie theatre. In October 2011, the Marlowe Theatre reopened after undergoing a thorough renovation.
Additionally to the two theatres, the city’s church and St. Augustine’s Abbey both host theatrical performances. At Canterbury Cathedral, T. S. Eliot’s Murder in the Cathedral had its world debut.
