Galashiels obtained its Burgh Charter in 1599, and since the 1930s, every summer has been marked by the “Braw Lads’ Gathering,” which features horseback riders parading through the community. The Scottish Renaissance-inspired Galashiels Burgh Chambers were finished in 1867.
In the latter part of the 19th century, the Paton Street drill hall was finished.
Galashiels’ population quickly increased as a result of the textile industry with several mills. The town is still connected to its past as a mill town by the Mill Lade, which runs through Wilderhaugh, Bank Street, the Fountain, and the street next to the Tesco/retail complex from the town’s vicinity of the mill sites at Wheatlands Road to Netherdale.
“Sae Fair Her Hair” and “Braw Lads,” two poems by Robert Burns, were written around Galashiels. Some residents of the community perform the latter song each year at the Braw Lads Gathering. Abbotsford, the residence of Sir Walter Scott, was constructed directly over the Tweed River from Galashiels. Galashiels lies on the Sir Walter Scott Way, a long-distance route that connects Moffat and Cockburnspath.
Some Galashiels residents have friendly rivalry with residents of other border towns, especially Hawick, which is the next-largest town in the Scottish Borders.
