About Hove

Hove had its own coat of arms while it was still a distinct entity. The official heraldic description of the escutcheon is “Tied in a pair: 2. Gules two pairs of leg-irons interwoven argent; 3. Checky or and azure three martlets or, all in a border ermine charged with six martlets or; 1. Or a saltire azure voided argent; 2.” The design includes a number of elements that are historically significant to Hove. The crest depicts the French raider ships that often raided the shore in the Brighton and Hove region in the 16th century. The leg-shackles of Leonard of Noblac and the saltire of Saint Andrew designate the old parish churches of St. Andrew’s and St. Leonard’s in Hove and Aldrington, respectively. At the time of the Norman Conquest, William de Warenne, 1st Earl of Surrey, had property in the Rape of Lewes, which included the area now occupied by Hove. His colours were blue and gold, which are symbolised by the checkerboard design on the shield’s backdrop.
